The awful statistic that shines out and impels this project is that Afghanistan has almost the worst infant mortality in the world – more than 1 in 10 children die at birth or during their first year.
It also has one of the highest maternal mortality rates with 46 mothers dying in childbirth for every ten thousand births.
A shortage of midwives and neonatal care is responsible for both of these statistics.
Underlying this is the lack of education for women and girls in Afghanistan, with the female literacy rate being something like 12%.
So we aim to recycle old mobile phones to raise money for charities working in this area – because recycling helps the planet too!.
